Keeping your hair extensions healthy in lockdown

As you will all hopefully know, most of the extensions that I fit last around 3 months (12 weeks) or 6 weeks for reusable hair extension methods such as Micro rings and Tape wefts.

Due to the current lockdown situation many of you will be in a position where we will need to decide whether to try and get your extensions to last longer than they usually would or attempt a DIY removal. Removal can be tricky on yourself, so my preference where safe to do so is to keep your extensions in.

Here are a few tips to help keep your hair extensions as healthy as possible during this time.

- When brushing your extensions, make sure you are using the correct soft bristle brush or Tangle Teezer to gentle de-tangle the ends and work your way upwards. Brush over the bonds and the scalp to keep them tangle free.

- Every day run your fingers through the root of your hair to feel if there are any extensions that are starting to tangle or get stuck together, if there are, gently detangle them with a brush or your fingers.

- If you already have tangled roots with many extensions getting knotted together then try to detangle these (it may be a good idea to get someone to help you). If you are unable to undo the knot, then please get in contact with me.

- Before and after washing your hair, section off a couple of rows of the extensions, clipping the other hair out of the way, and brush thoroughly, right over the root area.

- Ensure that you are still using the correct shampoo and that you are using conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair only.

- Loosely tie up or braid your hair at night to prevent matting.

- Apply an oil to the ends of the extensions to keep the hair in good condition.

- Try not to allow your hair to get too oily as this will cause the extension bonds to break down. Use it as a good opportunity to wash and blow dry your hair and make yourself feel good!

- Try not to pick or pull at the extension bonds as this could damage your natural hair.

- Use a mirror or get a family member to check the roots and bonds weekly. If the natural hair holding the extensions is looking thin and weak please contact me.
